Enhancing urban water environment in developing countries

· Coordinator :
United Nations University - Institute for the Advance Study of Sustainability

Despite the adoption of several measures at different levels aiming to combat urban water pollution and improve water quality, the deterioration of urban water bodies remains a challenging issue in the developing nations. Pollution is threatening the sustainability of urban water systems in developing Asian megacities. There is thus a need to share existing cost-effective strategies to improve the urban water environment and avoid the further deterioration of this critical natural asset. This can help address problems related to both water quality and quantity that become increasingly important in Asian urban contexts. Technological solutions may involve the development of sustainable ways to properly recycle or dispose pollutants. Yet, further solutions should be explored, including the development of tools to guide decision-makers. Water and Urban Initiative of UNU-IAS is working towards enhancing urban water environment in developing Asian cities. The aim of this session is to discuss existing situation, different challenges and feasible solutions to improve the urban water environment, particularly focusing on developing Asian Cities. Researchers and experts will discuss on recent research developments towards enhancing urban water environment with greater focus on human health risk, ecosystem conservation and flood impacts.
