Climate change adaptation in basins: examples and good practices

· Coordinator :
United Nations Economic Commission for Europe(UNECE)
· Co-Coordinator :
International Office for Water(IOWater), Wageningen University

Water is the primary medium through which climate change influences the Earths ecosystems and many basins around the world are already affected by such impacts. Basin-wide cooperation in adaptation enables more effective adaptation by sharing data, models and scenarios, and locating measures at optimal locations within the basin. First concrete experiences are now available on the implementation of adaptation measures within basins, for example within the global network of basins working on climate change adaptation, supported by the UNECE Water Convention and INBO, but also in other projects by IUCN, etc. These experiences need to be exchanged in order to enable more effective, efficient and sustainable adaptation. Therefore, following the recommendation of the 6th WWF in Marseille, UNECE and INBO have been working to consolidate these experiences into a practical publication to be presented at the 7th WWF in the Republic of Korea, namely a collection of lessons learned and good practices on how countries in a transboundary basin can work together to develop and implement an adaptation strategy and plan in water management taking into account the new challenges from climate change.
The session will give an overview of the most important lessons learned from adaptation in basins and will present the experiences gained though concrete cases from various basins in the world. Concrete adaptation measures with basin-wide benefits will be presented, such as ecosystem-based adaptation, improving of data and information exchange and awareness-raising activities. Special attention will be paid to emerging issues such as linking basin-wide, national and local adaptation and increasing synergies and managing tradeoffs between adaptation and mitigation.
